Ten Small Changes That Make a Rental Feel Like Home

No painting, no drilling, no lost deposit. Ten changes renters can make in a weekend that do more for a room than new furniture.

Renting often means white walls, a beige carpet and rules about holes in the wall. It is easy to feel that you cannot do much until you own a place. In reality, most of what makes a room feel personal is movable. Here are ten changes that make a real difference, and none of them should cost you your deposit. Always check your contract first.

1. Change the light bulbs

Rentals often come with harsh, cool bulbs. Swapping them for warm white bulbs, around 2700K, is the cheapest change with the biggest effect. Take the old bulbs with you when you move out and put them back.

2. Add lamps

Instead of relying on the ceiling light, bring in two or three lamps placed around the room. Light coming from several low points makes even a bland room feel warm. Our layered lighting guide explains why.

3. Cover the floor

A large rug hides a tired carpet or a cold floor and instantly defines the living area. Go as big as you can afford; a small rug makes a room look smaller. See our rug guide for sizes.

4. Replace the curtains or blinds

Landlord curtains are rarely beautiful. Linen or cotton curtains on a tension rod or on your own rod, if you are allowed, change the whole feel of a room. Keep the originals safely folded to put back later.

5. Lean art instead of hanging it

A narrow picture ledge, a sideboard or the top of a bookcase can hold a row of framed prints and photos leaning against the wall. You can rearrange them whenever you like and there are no holes to fill. Removable adhesive hooks work for lighter frames, but test them on a hidden area first, as they can lift some paints.

6. Bring in plants

Plants make a space feel alive and cared for. If you are not confident with them, start with forgiving ones such as pothos, snake plants or ZZ plants. Group a few together in pots that match, rather than scattering single ones around.

7. Swap cabinet handles

Changing kitchen cabinet or dresser handles is quick with a screwdriver. Keep the originals in a labeled bag and refit them when you leave. A set of solid brass or wooden handles can make cheap units look much better.

8. Layer textiles

Cushions, throws, a bedspread and a tablecloth add color, softness and personality in a way white walls cannot. Choose two or three colors and repeat them around the room so it feels considered.

9. Use freestanding storage

Clutter makes any room feel smaller. A good bookcase, baskets, a sideboard or a clothing rack you choose yourself gives everything a place and will move with you to the next home.

10. Add a mirror

A large mirror leaning against the wall reflects light and makes a room feel bigger. Place it opposite or beside a window to double the daylight.

What to spend on

If your budget is limited, spend it on things you will take with you: a good rug, lamps and one or two pieces of furniture you love. Avoid spending on anything fixed to the property. In a few years, your next home will start with all of it already in place.
